For those of you new to my blog, F.I.R.E. stands for Financial Independence Retire Early. This is followed by many people wanting to save dramatically, and build their wealth, so they can retire early thus giving them freedom to work or volunteer at their leisure.
Today, I wanted to follow up on this methodology and talk more about the “how to” of saving dramatically, like 50% of your income.
One way I save is to thrift. Now don’t judge me! There is a lot of good stuff in thrift stores, and there are all types of thrift stores! I check out everything from the consignment shops to Goodwill stores. And I’ve shopped them across the US.
When I’m shopping, I often have a list with me. I look for clothing, home accessories, furniture, patio furniture, garden pots, kitchen wares, you name it! Sometimes I score, sometimes I don’t, but I love the “thrill of the hunt!” It’s also a great place to look for those home office items we all need, now that more of us are working from home.
My current favorite clothing consignment store is My Sister’s Closet in Scottsdale, AZ. My sister and I had so much fun checking out both of their locations.
I enjoy seeing merchandise repurposed and reused as well as tastefully displayed. It pleases my sense of beauty and order. I will often snap a picture of how an item is used differently so I can go home and copy it!
In fact, when I travel, one of my fun expeditions is to check out the local thrift stores. My current favorite Goodwill store is in Medford, Oregon. It is super clean and organized with friendly employees.
My daughter taught me, you don’t have to leave your house to thrift. She loves a website called Poshmark, and finds the best deals on clothing there. And of course, there’s Ebay to shop for every imagined item. Great thing about sites like these is you can also sell items you no longer need or want.
Another website is the local Facebook Marketplace, which I enjoy checking out when I’m looking for a particular item. I’ve also sold household items on this site with fairly good luck. You can find used school items here, too, now that more parents are homeschooling.
I’d love to hear how you save money with your purchases, repurposing, or reselling items you no longer need. It’s a great way to save and make a little income when the time comes to declutter and simplify!
