The question I get asked often is, “Why are you a financial coach?” There are a couple reasons, one of them being it fulfills one of my core values, to make a positive difference in this world. One way I make a positive impact is to inspire and guide women with their finances.
I provide financial coaching to women in all stages of life, but one of the hardest times is when you lose your spouse. I was there for my younger sister when she lost her husband at a young age, and I’ve had empathy and compassion for young women who lose their spouses as a result of that experience. I saw first hand how devastating it was, especially when you have young children, too.
The first thing I tell widows is you do NOT have to make any quick or fast financial decisions. Do not be pressured into doing anything with your money until you have had time to think and ponder it first. The first six months you will feel like you’re in a “fog” as you deal with what has to be taken care of immediately. Only do what is required to pay the bills and buy groceries for the first couple months. Walk away from anyone who pressures you into making any investments or buy anything during the first year.
This email brought tears to my eyes. She’s a young lady, barely 30, who lost her spouse to cancer and has young children. She’s trying to cope, be smart with her finances, and “hold it all together.” And she wrote:
“You are the absolute best, Linda. Thank you so much for all that you are doing for me. You have brought me so much comfort and peace in knowing I have you. Thank you for looking out for me, having my best interest and all the advice you are giving me towards my future.” D
This is how I make a positive difference in this crazy world we live in, by educating and guiding women to make informed financial decisions that will help them achieve their future financial goals. I am passionate about helping women understand their choices and empowering them to be financially savvy.
